Ethnic studies acknowledges the racist conditions under which BIPOC youth and educators live, labor and learn. It recognizes our multidimensional experiences--our joys, our suffering, our contributions, our struggles. Ethnic studies frames structural racism, not BIPOC people, as the problem to be solved.
Umuwi Ethnic Studies is a new organization dedicated to protecting and sustaining ethnic studies in Chicago. Umuwi is a Tagalog word meaning “to return home.”
Through education and coalition-building, the cultivation of an ethnic studies movement in Chicago is an opportunity to improve educational outcomes, cultivate a sense of belonging and wellness for BIPOC youth and educators, increase civic engagement, and bring us together across differences to build more equitable futures and make Chicago the home we all need and dream of.
Our team of liberatory, experienced, Chicago-based leaders have been the driving force behind the creation of Umuwi Ethnic Studies. Additionally, we take immense pride in our incredible Program Advisory Board, comprised of 22 educators, organizers, parents and community-engaged scholars.
